Unit 0503 Steps by shinypants Unit 0503 Steps by shinypants
I had a pretty crazy response on Unit 0503. im a little blown away. thanks to everyone for the encouragement!

Just in case anyone wondered how i did this...

#1 Initial Alechemy sketch using pull shapes and a low opacity so that layering occurs.

#2 Taken into photoshop. Grey overlayed in the background and I've begun to explore the shapes from Alchemy. Really dont know what im going to end up with at this stage.

#3 Here I've finished the main greyscale rendering. Now I'm a fan layering and relayering items, so what i've done is grabbed the Alchemy sketch and layered it again in Colour Dodge mode on a lower opacity. Means some of the interesting texture and shapes are still showing through.

#4 Now the fun starts. I've used a Colour Balance adjustment layer to bring in some colour to the piece. Additionally I've used the Distort>Lens Correction filter to bring in some vignetting and some Chromatic Aberration. Chromatic Aberration is a strange effect when i dont tend to use because i think it could be cheesy but sometimes it works nicely. Its most notable towards the edges of the piece near the arms.

#5 I've lowered the opacity of the colour balance and started overlaying bits of colour and decals. I've added some text and a texture across the middle. This is probably one of the most time consuming parts for me because you can litterally go crazy adding stripes and colours etc. The possibilities are near endless. That and the fact that I'm still learning how to do this myself.

#6 I've added a photo a friend took of some really nice looking clouds in the background and I've overlayed a photo of a wall I took in Europe on the rest of the armour. Then i've added some of the vignetting back in because it got a little lost and I've added in the little noise trick that Adhonis uses.

Hope this has been useful for someone...

Hi,
Great work. I am not sure if its a default feature in photoshop. How do you get the symmetrical design in photoshop such as characters.

no default symmetrical as far as i know... just a lot of copying one side and flipping it across...

This is too cool ^^ This would make a great science fiction design in a game or tv series. Just solid and intimidating.

very clever. it's like the old scwiggle drawings, where you go mad with a pen and find an image in it afterwards. You found an excellent design amongst all the noise in this one. keep up the great work

Hahahahaha, no, not cooking. I was reading about it in an illustration book. It was just a short tutorial with a little instruction. The process the artist used was called "glazing", which is apparently when an artist starts off the picture, details and all, in black and white and then put in a color overlay. It seemed similar to what you did here. Hahaahaha, I could be wrong of course but it seems like the same technique.

Yea, haha I didn't know the name until I saw that book. That's the technique I decided to use for my next couple of pieces, so I'm paying full attention to this tutorial!~ :D

you need to put your vector shapes into a pdf and then into the relevant directory in alchemy. That being said you cant have overly complicated shapes i think.

hey i wasnt entirely sure if you meant the numbers for the frames or the numbers on his chest and shoulder. so i found out both!

the numbers on the frames are : weltron urban

and the others are a font called: oktober

Both are mucho cool and perfect for the design. Thanks for looking 'em up!

Most of my 'cool-shit' fonts are from a book balled Metal Heart (came w/ a disk loaded w/ design goodies): [link]

But I'm always keeping an eye out for similar sweetness.
